A Commercial Cleaner’s Professional Office Cleaning Tips – Spills, Stains, and Odours

What’s the best day of the week at your office? Is it the day after JDI Cleaning Services restores your office to its spotlessly clean self? Here are a few easy tips from JDI’s cleaning files to prevent accidents like a spilled lunch soup from turning the office punch clock back a day.

The last thing you need at work is a cleaning emergency. If you’re the office manager, those spills taunt you every day and are added to your long list of ‘but, how long is this going to take?’ list.

noun

Coffee-spill blindness: a state of no longer noticing unappealing office coffee stains

..but fresh eyes sure do.

A small coffee spill is usually accompanied by, well, no sound at all other than the retreat of footsteps overdubbed with sounds of happy sipping. Coffee spills are rarely noticed.

If you happen to see a fresh coffee spill, follow these tips. If it’s dry, add the cleaning mixture and leave it to soak and loosen the stain.

Always test any cleaning solution on an out-of-the-way portion in case an ingredient (the vinegar or baking soda) lightens the carpet or fabric.

  • First, dab or blot relentlessly with a paper towel until it feels almost dry.
  • In a small container, add two teaspoons of white vinegar, a drop of dish soap, and a bit of hot water.
  • Leave this spot to dry. If it doesn’t change colour, you can keep using it.
  • Use a fresh cloth or brush to rub it into the area, and dab with a dry towel to remove the rest.
  • Add a teaspoon of baking soda, that together with white vinegar fizzes, its way deep into a carpet or fabric’s weave.

It’s computer keyboard cleaning time.

JDI Cleaning Services allows keyboards and computer screens to remain your cleaning domain. However, we know your keyboard turns into a crumb tray and coffee sponge during your coffee break.

Blowing crumbs away does help, but if your keyboard is looking a bit dirty, here’s what to do:

  • Purchase a can of compressed air. It is very effective at blowing tiny bits off its keys.
  • A Q-tip dipped in white vinegar, then squeezed relatively dry, is a great way to remove dirt and coffee stains from your keyboard.
  • A fun alternative to a wet cleaning solution is to fold a sticky note in half, with the sticky side out, and run it along the crevices of the keyboard.
  • Or use a soft toothbrush to clean between the keys.

Clean your computer monitor.

Here’s what to do if you’d like an easy DIY cleaning solution for your monitor screen:

  • Use air-in-a-can (compressed air) or a soft brush to clean the monitor frame edges.
  • White vinegar and a soft cloth should clean most monitors without leaving a film. The vinegar cuts through previous cleaner residues. However, make sure you test a corner and leave it for an hour to make sure the monitor material does not react to the vinegar.

Clean your office fridge.

You’ve become pretty good at tossing your week-old leftovers, so the office fridge doesn’t become populated with mystery containers. However, all that food can become aromatic, and not in a good way. The refrigerator still needs to have an occasional cleaning:

  • Baking soda in its box left open at the back of the fridge effectively absorbs lunch smells.
  • Any spills are most easily cleaned with dish soap, hot water, and a cloth or paper towel.
  • Most freezers are self-defrosting. However, if your office is a museum of torturous freezers, first thing in the morning is a great time to unplug the fridge and open the freezer door to allow the ice to melt. By mid-afternoon, you should loosen any chunks of ice and use hot water to clean the interior.

Does your office microwave have an odour?

Similar to your office fridge, the microwave is usually the cleaning domain of your office manager. A clean microwave is an odourless microwave. Here are a few tips to make cleaning easier:

  • You can remind people with a stick note right on the microwave to make sure their containers are partially covered to avoid blow-ups.
  • If there are no hardened food remnants, hot water and a cloth will clean the interior.
  • Otherwise, for tough food grime, fill a bowl halfway with water and add two teaspoons of baking soda. Let the bowl run for a few minutes to create steam.
  • Remove the boiling bowl with oven mitts or two cloths and wipe the inside of the microwave.

Has your office sink stopped draining easily?

There is a good argument for a sink garburator; however, an office sink is likely the last place you’ll find one. Here’s an excellent suggestion for a clogged drain:

  • Purchase a second toilet plunger and keep it in the bottom of your sink cupboard. There is no need for corrosive and environmentally harmful cleaning products.
